This bookmark is an adaptation of the design used in the cast concrete plaques in Aline Barnsdall's 1921 Hollyhock House. Wright's abstraction of the hollyhock (alcea rosea) has been described as Mayan, but it actually allows for much freedom of interpretation. A series of these plaques runs across the west facade of the house, and variations of the design are used throughout the house, on exterior planters, and stele.
